Putin warns the West with nuclear bombs in Belarus. On Friday, President Vladimir Putin announced that he had deployed tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, reminding the West that it could not destroy Russia strategically.
Putin claimed Russian tactical nuclear warheads had been sent to close partner Belarus at Russia’s flagship economic event in St. Petersburg. Still, he emphasized he saw no need for nuclear weapons.
“As you know we were negotiating with our ally, (Belarusian President) Alexander Lukashenko, that we would move a part of these tactical nuclear weapons to the territory of Belarus – this has happened,” stated Putin.
Belarus received its first nuclear warheads. The first section only. We’ll finish this by summer or year’s end.”
The Russian leader said Moscow’s first deployment of such warheads. These shorter-range nuclear weapons might be deployed on the battlefield outside Russia since the demise of the Soviet Union was a signal to the West against arming and backing Ukraine.
Putin added, “…It is precisely as an element of deterrence so that all those who are thinking about inflicting a strategic defeat on us are not oblivious to this circumstance,” using a diplomatic word for a defeat so severe that Russian strength would be degraded on the world arena for decades.
Lukashenko, a Putin friend, stated late Tuesday that his country has begun receiving Russian tactical nuclear weapons, including some three times more powerful than the atomic bombs unleashed on Japan in 1945.
In March, the Russian leader stated he would deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, citing decades of U.S. deployment in various European countries.
