The Prime Minister said he “heard a message” after Conservative local election losses. Tories lost nationwide. Bolton Tories lost seven seats overnight in Greater Manchester.
In Tameside and Salford, they lost the same number. For the first time since 1998, the Conservatives lost Medway Council and Thurrock Council’s leader.
Despite changing Prime Ministers twice since the last local election, the Conservatives face a general election year with work to do. This morning, Rishi Sunak called the findings “a message” (May 5).
Mr. Sunak told Sky News: “It’s always disappointing to lose hard-working Conservative councilors; they’re friends and colleagues, and I’m so grateful for everything they’ve done.
“In terms of the results, it’s still early; we’ve just had a quarter of the results in, but what I am going to keep doing is delivering on the people’s priorities—halving inflation, growing the economy, reducing debt, cutting waiting lists, and stopping the boats.
“That’s what people want us to do, so I’ll keep at it.”
“We’re making progress in key electoral battlegrounds like Peterborough, Bassetlaw, Sandwell. Tonight, people want us to focus on their priorities and deliver.”
Labor and the Lib Dems won huge this year and expected their greatest local election performance in a decade. Labour’s national campaign coordinator, Shabana Mahmood, said: “These results show that we are on course for a majority Labour government.
Labour’s strategy to address the Tory cost of living problem, voters’ top concern, has been the campaign’s focus. However, However, Rishi Sunak can’t discuss it since the Tories ruined the economy and can’t mend it.
