Donald Trump, a Republican running for president, said Thursday that U.S. college graduates should “automatically” earn green cards so they can remain in the nation.

You graduate from a college, I think you should automatically get a green card to be able to stay in this country,” Trump said on the All-In podcast held by tech investors. He added that this should apply to junior institutions as well.

Green cards, sometimes called permanent resident cards, pave the way to citizenship and enable foreign nationals to live and work in the US indefinitely.

Trump has criticized President Joe Biden’s attempts to reduce the unprecedented number of migrants entering the US illegally. Trump has pledged a broad crackdown upon immigration if reelected and has maintained a harsh position on the issue throughout his presidency.

“Anybody graduates from a college you go in there for two years or four years if you graduate or you get a doctorate degree from a college you should be able to stay in this country,” stated the president.

Trump may have been referring to all foreign nationals, including those who overstayed their visas or entered the country illegally, or he may have been talking only to students.

In the past, legislators on both the Republican and Democratic sides of the US Congress have introduced bills that would facilitate the permanent residency of certain college grads.
