The defense minister said on Thursday that Poland had dismantled an espionage network after private station RMF FM claimed that Russian operatives had been captured.
RMF announced Wednesday that Polish security forces had apprehended six Russian spies. In addition, the broadcaster reported sabotage plans.
Mariusz Blaszczak informed state radio Polskie Radio 1 that “the complete spy network has been unravelled” by Internal Security Agency employees.
“This proves that the Polish services protect our nation efficiently.”
Blaszczak declined to comment and said Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski would release further details at an 11 a.m. press conference (1000 GMT).
Andrzej Duda met with CIA Director William Burns on Wednesday. The president’s office said they addressed “the present security situation.”
The RMF report said the six detainees were Russian intelligence agents from eastern Poland. Spies had hidden cameras on major railway lines, particularly in southern Podkarpackie.
RMF spotted cameras at Jasionka airfield in Rzeszow, a crucial transport site for guns and ammunition to Ukraine.
After discovering the spy network, RMF claimed increased protection around important infrastructure and train lines.
