PM says Belgium is examining Russia’s weapons usage. On Monday, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said that Belgium would ask Ukraine to clarify accusations that pro-Ukrainian forces used Belgian firearms to battle Russian troops within Russia’s western border.
The Washington Post reported Saturday that anti-Kremlin fighters who launched a cross-border attack from Ukraine into the Russian Belgorod region last month used tactical vehicles the US and Poland gave to Ukraine and rifles made in Belgium and the Czech Republic.
“Our defence ministry and its intelligence agencies have started an investigation and are asking for information to determine what has happened exactly,” De Croo told Belgium’s Radio 1.
“European weapons are provided to Ukraine on the condition that they are used to defend Ukrainian land. “We have strict controls to ensure this,” he stated.
De Croo declined to comment on potential ramifications if the accusations were true.
“We must not get ahead of ourselves here,” the prime minister remarked. “But we’re analyzing and taking this seriously.”
