On Friday, Gazeta Wyborcza revealed that Pegasus malware hacked an opposition-linked Polish mayor’s phone.
The Associated Press reported in 2021 that Israel-based NSO Group software hacked the phones of government dissidents, including a senator from the leading opposition party.
Security agencies were accused of subverting democracy.
In 2018–2019, Jacek Karnowski, mayor of Sopot, a Baltic coastal resort, was working on the opposition’s Senate campaign, according to the liberal newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza.
The Pegasus Project, an investigative journalism endeavor, has his number on a list.
“We will not allow the PiS machine to further erode democracy, drag Poland to the East and sovietize our nation,” Karnowski told Reuters. “These politicians deserve jail.”
Polish government and security agency spokespeople were unavailable for comment.
Top PiS officials have admitted to buying the sophisticated malware but denied using it on political opponents.
