Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Finance Minister, warned on Monday that provincial snap elections are not in the nation’s best interest.
His words violate last week’s Supreme Court ruling to hold elections and threaten a constitutional crisis that would worsen Pakistan’s political and economic turmoil.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had to report back to the court on Tuesday after the government failed to provide 21 billion Pakistani rupees ($73.4 million) by Monday.
Dar introduced a new finance measure Monday to vote on election funds.
“Snap polls aren’t in the national interest,” he told lawmakers in a televised speech.
Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan disbanded his local governments in two provinces early this year to pressure the government to seek hasty national elections in October.
