In a Monday news conference, police reported 109 shootings, 19 of them deadly, over Chicago’s Fourth of July weekend. Gun violence is down nationwide this year but rises every summer.

Police data show all victims were 16–36-year-old males and men.

Police police tape surrounds children’s bicycles and baby strollers near the Highland Park, Illinois Fourth of July parade shooting that killed seven people on July 4, 2022.
Gun violence in the city and nation has dropped in recent years, but this holiday weekend was nasty.

On June 24, Chicago reported 1,105 shooting occurrences, down 6% from last year and 12% from the previous two. The Chicago Police Department reported 271 gun deaths as of June 24, a 12% drop from last year and 16% drop over the prior two years.

Last year over the long holiday weekend, Chicago police reported 57 shootings and eight deaths between Friday, June 30 at 6 p.m. and Tuesday, July 4 at 11:59 p.m.
