OpenAI CEO is hopeful about global AI coordination. On Monday, OpenAI’s CEO stated he was “quite optimistic” about global AI cooperation after touring major cities.
The startup’s public face, sponsored by Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), has been on a frantic tour to capitalize on interest in generative AI and influence policy.
“I came to the trip… sceptical that it was going to be possible in the short term to get global cooperation to reduce existential risk, but I am now wrapping up the trip feeling quite optimistic we can get it done,” Sam Altman told Tokyo, students.
Generative AI, which can create text and graphics, is causing excitement and alarm about its potential to change many industries. Regulators are trying to adjust existing standards and create new ones.
The EU’s draft AI Act is anticipated to become law this year, while the US is considering updating existing rules for AI.
Altman met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in April and considered creating an office in Japan.
“All of the conversations have progressed quite well,” Altman said on Monday without elaborating.
While its manufacturing giants invest in automation technologies, Japan remains behind in consumer-friendly AI services.
“There’s a long history of humans and machines working together here,” Altman remarked.
