Emmanuel Macron said that individuals disrespecting the democratic process and elected leaders endanger democracy after protesters disrupted his address on Tuesday in The Hague.

A pension bill raising the retirement age for French employees has been the target of weeks of furious demonstrations at home. Macron was scheduled to address European sovereignty at the start of a state visit to the Netherlands.

“French democracy – where is it? Where did we go wrong? “At the occasion at the Nexus Institute, one man yelled. Others screamed about pension reform and climate change.

“President of violence and hypocrisy,” read one of the demonstrators’ banners.

Macron shouted in competition with others for a few minutes to be heard. While protests were inappropriate during the conference, he stated social discourse was “extremely necessary.”

He remarked that the equivalent of voting and electing individuals is that you must respect the institutions that the people have chosen. You endanger democracy when you think, “I disagree with the law, so I may do anything I want.”

After that, Macron began to speak, and the demonstrators were taken out, according to reporters in the room.
