On Monday, Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) and MediaTek Inc (2454. TW) announced a partnership to power advanced automotive infotainment systems that may stream video or games or communicate with drivers using AI.
MediaTek will integrate an Nvidia graphic processing unit chipset and software into its system-on-chips for vehicles’ infotainment displays under the collaboration, unveiled at Computex in Taipei.
The firms stated that Nvidia-based automated driving systems would work with MediaTek systems. Cameras would watch the driver while dashboard screens showed the environment.
Gaming, artificial intelligence for voice-activated features, driver monitoring systems, and automated driving displays make in-vehicle displays and entertainment systems more complicated.
Qualcomm, MediaTek’s main smartphone competitor, is also courting automakers. Qualcomm and SalesForce established a connected vehicle platform agreement earlier this year.
The firms claimed Nvidia may now enter the $12 billion infotainment system-on-chip market through MediaTek.
Nvidia targets Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover. MediaTek, which makes Android smartphone chips, supplies Dimensity Auto technology to mass-market, low-cost vehicle lines.
“There are a lot of segments they are addressing that Nvidia has not addressed,” said Danny Shapiro, Nvidia’s automotive vice president.
Companies did not identify potential automotive customers.
