No deal with Turkey on the Swedish NATO bid—Hungary’s Orban. Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, stated at a news briefing on Thursday that there is no agreement between Hungary and Turkey about the approval of Sweden’s application for membership in NATO. This is because it will be up to the Hungarian parliament to determine when to vote.

Orban said there was not a significant amount of desire among MPs from the ruling party in Budapest to endorse Sweden’s application. Turkey and Hungary have also declined to support Sweden’s application, which has delayed the application.

In September, Orban stated that Hungary was not hurrying to confirm Sweden’s membership in NATO. This statement indicated that there would be an additional delay in the process, which has been stuck in Parliament since 2016.

He stated that there is “no Hungarian-Turkish agreement” on Sweden’s request for NATO and that “only the Hungarian parliament…when lawmakers decide the time has come for it” will decide whether to approve it. He was referring to the fact that they had not reached a consensus. The willingness of these individuals to make this choice is not very strong.

As a justification for the delay in accepting Sweden’s request, Budapest has highlighted what it has referred to as “undue allegations” made by Swedish MPs that it has weakened democratic rights.

Sometime around the middle of February, the work of the Hungarian parliament, which is presently on vacation due to the winter season, will return.
