Brazilian soccer star Neymar is officially out of World Cup Friday due to a back injury in a quarterfinal match against Colombia, confirmed by the Brazilian team doctor.
Fox Sports reported that Brazilian Team Doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said after the game that Neymar’s third vertebrae had been broken. Twenty-two-year-old Neymar was kneed in the back by the Colombian player Juan Camilo Zuniga in the second half of the game which Brazil won 2 to 1. He was in tears because of the pain while being carried off the field on a stretcher.
“It’s not serious in the sense that it doesn’t need surgery, but he’ll need to immobilise it to recover,” Rodrigo Lasmar, team doctor, said. “Unfortunately, he’s not going to be able to play.”
Lasmar said the recovery should take at least a few weeks, which means Neymar would miss the semifinal on Tuesday and the final, if Brazil advances, on July 13.
According to CNN, Neymar’s loss is huge for Brazil, because he had been the biggest star on the team. He had scored four goals so far in the game, which held the highest record on his team and in the World Cup besides Colombia’s James Rodriguez.
Argentinian Messi, Neymar’s teammate on Barcelona, wrote on Facebook with his best wishes, “Get well soon my friend, Neymar Jr.”
Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff also spoke about Neymar’s injury on Twitter, ”Along with the rest of Brazil I’m hoping for the recovery of our greatest player.”
