Netflix finally decides to play nice and support the Apple TV app

Netflix briefly integrated with Apple TV, allowing users to link accounts and access features like “Continue Watching.” However, the integration was quickly reversed, with Netflix calling it inadvertent. This incident raises speculation about whether Netflix may reconsider its long-standing resistance to third-party aggregation in response to evolving streaming habits.

Netflix’s Brief Experiment with Apple TV Integration—and Why It Matters

For years, Netflix has maintained a firm stance against integrating its content with third-party platforms like Apple TV, preferring to keep viewers within its own ecosystem. However, on February 14, 2025, some Apple TV 4K users in the U.S. noticed a surprising change—an option to link their Netflix accounts to the Apple TV app. This brief integration excited subscribers and led to speculation about whether Netflix was shifting its long-held strategy.

A Surprise Integration—and a Quick Retreat

For a short period, those who connected their Netflix accounts to the Apple TV app could add popular shows like Stranger Things and Squid Game to their Apple TV watchlists. Additionally, Netflix content appeared in the “Continue Watching” section, a feature previously unavailable for Netflix titles in the Apple TV ecosystem.

Tech publication The Verge confirmed that Netflix had been listed as a participating streaming service within the Apple TV app, though Apple’s official website did not reflect the change. However, just as abruptly as it appeared, the integration was removed. Netflix later confirmed to The Verge that the feature had been rolled out “inadvertently” and was quickly reversed. The company did not clarify whether this was a mere mistake or a trial run for future integration.

Netflix’s Resistance to Third-Party Aggregation

Netflix’s hesitation to integrate with third-party aggregators is nothing new. In 2018, co-founder Reed Hastings clearly stated that the company preferred audiences to engage with its content directly rather than through external platforms like Apple TV or Google TV. This stance has ensured that Netflix retains full control over the user experience, from navigation to content recommendations.

Another possible reason for Netflix’s resistance is financial. The company has deliberately avoided Apple’s App Store subscription model to bypass giving Apple a percentage of its revenue from in-app purchases. This strategy aligns with Netflix’s broader approach to maintaining independence from tech intermediaries.

A Possible Shift in Strategy

While Netflix insists that the brief Apple TV integration was unintentional, the incident raises an important question: Could Netflix be reconsidering its approach? Streaming habits have evolved, with platforms like Apple TV, Google TV, and Roku becoming central hubs for content discovery. Many consumers now prefer to access their favorite streaming services through a single interface rather than navigating multiple standalone apps.

Netflix’s reluctance to integrate with third-party platforms could become a disadvantage if competitors provide a more seamless, user-friendly experience. While neither Netflix nor Apple has made any official announcements regarding the incident, the temporary integration has reignited speculation about whether Netflix might one day soften its stance.

What This Means for Users

For Apple TV users, the brief integration revealed the convenience of having Netflix content streamlined alongside other streaming services. If Netflix were to fully support third-party aggregation in the future, managing content across multiple platforms would become far easier. This would be particularly beneficial for users who rely on universal watchlists and “Continue Watching” sections to keep track of their favorite shows and movies.

For Netflix, integrating with Apple TV could increase visibility for its content at a time when competition among streaming services is fiercer than ever. However, this would come at the cost of relinquishing some control over content discovery and user engagement.

For now, Netflix remains committed to its independent platform strategy. Whether this incident was an accidental rollout or a quiet experiment, it has sparked discussions about the possibility of Netflix re-evaluating its approach in the future. As consumer expectations continue to shift, Netflix may eventually need to adapt to remain both competitive and user-friendly.
