Netflix Expands with New Global Markets

DVD Netflix subscriptions have dipped recently, but international streaming services have exponentially risen in sales in the last quarter. While 391,000 customers dropped their DVD-by-mail plans in the last quarter, Netflix added 1.12 million international subscribers in the same time frame. There’s potential for higher numbers when Netflix adds six new streaming markets, including France and Germany.

Netflix added 570,000 U.S. streaming subscribers to bring the total to 36.2 million. The international customer total has hit 13.8 million. The company has drawn critical success for its shows; it gathered 31 Emmy nominations this month and is challenging premium networks like HBO and Showtime.

Part of Netflix’s burgeoning success is attributed to the women’s prison series “Orange is the New Black.” “Orange is the New Black,” recently attracted droves of new subscribers in Latin America, where soccer fans purchased web-enabled TVs for the World Cup Tournament.

International streaming revenue passed the DVD-by-mail revenue at the end of last year. Shares have jumped from 49 cents a year ago to $1.15 today. Revenue grew 25 percent to $1.34 billion.

Netflix absorbed a $42 million loss outside of the U.S. in the current financial period, largely due to added foreign expansion costs. It dwarfs the previous period’s $15 million loss.
