RIA reports that Myanmar received the first shipment of Russia’s Su-30 fighter jets. According to comments by Charlie Than, Myanmar’s commerce minister, to the Russian official news agency RIA on Sunday, Myanmar has received the first cargo of two Russian Su-30 fighter planes.
Than told RIA outside of the Eastern Economic Forum, which begins on Sunday in the port of Vladivostok and is a yearly event hosted by Russia to foster regional economic cooperation and attract international investment. “Two aircraft have already been delivered,” Than said.
RIA said a deal between Russia and Myanmar to provide six Su-30SME fighters was inked in September 2022.
According to Rosoboronexport, the state-controlled weapons exporter in Russia, the Sukhoi Su-30SME multi-role fighter aircraft is intended for aerial target engagement, reconnaissance, combat employment, and pilot training.
Separately, Than informed the Russian official news outlet TASS that several bilateral agreements, including ones on fostering tourism between the two nations, would be inked during the East Economic Forum.
The Russian defense ministry did not immediately answer an inquiry for comment from Reuters.
The Russian supply of weaponry is contributing to a conflict that has turned into a tragedy for Myanmar, according to a warning from the United States that Russia’s support for the country’s military leadership is inappropriate and destabilizing.
Both the military minister and the senior diplomat of Russia have visited Myanmar. Since 2021, Min Aung Hlaing, the junta’s leader, has been there often and received an honorary degree.
