According to a Wednesday federal court filing in Florida, former U.S. President Donald Trump is suing Michael Cohen for more than $500 million.
Cohen, Trump’s “fixer,” appeared before a Manhattan grand jury that indicted Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, the first time a former president had been charged with a crime.
On April 4, 2024, Republican presidential candidate Trump pled not guilty. Cohen will be a key witness in the case, which involves a hush payment he made before the 2016 election to a porn star who claims she slept with Trump.
Cohen is accused of breaking his attorney-client relationship with Trump by divulging his “confidences” and “spreading falsehoods” through books, podcasts, and media appearances.
In his 2020 book “Disloyal,” Cohen falsely labeled Trump “racist” and faked Trump conversations.
“The timing of Disloyal’s release, just prior to the November 3, 2020 Presidential Election, suggests that Defendant intended to improperly disclose Plaintiff’s confidences when it would be most lucrative to do so—and while Disloyal would be sure to have the most damaging reputational effect,” the lawsuit said.
Biden defeated Trump.
Cohen did not immediately comment.
Cohen was Trump’s real estate company’s chief executive until becoming his lawyer in 2017.
Cohen said before a U.S. congressional committee in 2019 that he would “do anything” to defend Trump, reversing his previous position.
“I am ashamed because I know what Mr. Trump is,” Cohen told the panel. “He’s racist. Con guy. He cheats.”
Cohen admitted to breaching federal election law by paying Stormy Daniels $130,000 in 2018. He was sentenced to three years in jail for those offenses, including tax evasion and lying to Congress about the Trump Organization’s withdrawal from a Russian building project.
Trump denies Daniels affair. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg accuses him of fabricating Trump Organization documents to hide that he reimbursed Cohen for Daniels.
