Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called a new State Department study’s allegations of official misconduct “lies” on Tuesday.
According to the Monday report, police, military, and other authorities in Mexico have committed unlawful or arbitrary executions, forced disappearance, torture, and cruel treatment.
“Impunity and extremely low rates of prosecution remained an issue for all crimes, including human rights violations and corruption,” the study condemned Mexican journalist violence.
At a press conference, López Obrador called the study “lies” and said the U.S. “believes it’s the government of the world.”
“It’s not worth getting furious over, that’s simply how they are,” Lopez Obrador remarked before meeting with former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in Mexico on Tuesday. The report is “lies.”
After the kidnapping of four Americans in northern Mexico earlier this month, López Obrador has rebuffed U.S. criticism of his security record. Two were discovered deceased.
The Marxist president, who claims he is fighting corruption and impunity in Mexico, has claimed his nation is safer than the U.S. despite a significantly higher murder rate and blasted U.S. efforts to stop dangerous narcotics from entering the country.
