On Wednesday, Facebook owner Meta (META.O) revealed that malware distributors used public interest in ChatGPT to trick users into installing harmful programs and browser extensions, similar to cryptocurrency schemes.

In research, the social media giant uncovered ten malware families and over 1,000 dangerous websites marketed as products utilizing the popular artificial intelligence-powered chatbot since March.

The business stated some spyware supplied ChatGPT capabilities with abusive files.

At a press briefing on the report, Meta Chief Information Security Officer Guy Rosen said, “ChatGPT is the new crypto.”

Rosen and other Meta officials claimed the business was bracing for abuses related to generative AI technologies like ChatGPT, which can instantly generate human-like writing, music, and art.

The technologies may aid internet misinformation efforts, lawmakers say.

The CEOs said generative AI was still early in information operations, but Rosen anticipated “bad actors” to use it to “try to speed up and perhaps scale up” their actions.
