ABC reported on Friday that a federal grand jury investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol had ordered former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows and other key officials to testify.
In one of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s two Trump inquiries, the grand jury examines Trump, and his supporters’ failed 2020 election overturn attempt.
Trump, a 2024 presidential candidate who labels the probes politically motivated, has tried to use executive privilege to keep former advisers from testifying. Georgia and New York are investigating him.
ABC reported that U.S. Judge Beryl Howell denied Trump’s claim of executive privilege for Meadows and other former officials, including former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe.
ABC stated that Dan Scavino, Ken Cuccinelli, Stephen Miller, Nick Luna, and John McEntee were all former aides.
Trump, Meadows, and Miller’s lawyers and the Justice Department did not reply to requests for comment. Some former aides and their attorneys were unavailable to Reuters.
