Man Kills and Plans to Eat Girlfriend’s Dog

A New Mexico man killed and planned to eat his girlfriend’s dog, claiming there was nothing to eat at the house.

According to CNN, Salvador Martinez, the suspect, stabbed 9-month-old dog Onyx and skinned her. Martinez buried some parts of the dog in the backyard and stored others parts in the freezer.

“He had her marinating in Italian dressing in the fridge,” Mandy Malone, dog owner and Martinez’s girlfriend, said. “What could possibly go through someone’s mind to do something that sick?”

Martinez was released Wednesday, July 30, from a Torrance County court and was charged for extreme cruelty to animals. Heath White, Torrance County sheriff, said he predicted Martinez would not be freed for long.

“He was already on probation for trafficking drugs and… violated his probation, so he’s likely going to be picked back up… and sent back to a federal facility,” White said.

Officials said Martinez admitted to killing the dog and said Malone “told him to go ahead” because there was no food to eat. Malone denied the claim. Martinez also said he decided to eat the dog because he found dog recipes online, and it is legal to eat dogs in some states.

In fact, it is legal to eat dogs in New Mexico. However, White said he was not arrested because he wanted to eat dogs.

“But it’s the manner that it was done, and the emotional stress it put on the rest of the family, that led us to arrest him and charge him with animal cruelty,” White said.
