Malaysian authorities said Friday they would sue Facebook parent company Meta Platforms (META.O) for failing to remove “undesirable” information.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission claimed Facebook had noticed a lot of offensive content related to race, royalty, religion, defamation, impersonation, online gambling, and scam ads.
It said Meta had ignored its requests and that legal action was needed to promote “accountability for cybersecurity” and “enhancing consumer protection.”
Meta did not immediately comment. The commission also did not quickly react to a legal action request.
Meta, Google’s YouTube, and TikTok’s material are typically regulated.
Southeast Asian countries often request content removal.
Vietnam threatened to shut down Facebook in 2020 unless it censored more local political content. Last year, Vietnamese social media platforms banned over 3,200 misleading and illegal postings and videos in the first quarter.
2019 Facebook removed hundreds of Indonesian fake news syndicate accounts, pages, and groups.
