MacKenzie Scott’s Charitable Act: $640 Million Donated to Nonprofits Across the US

Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has made headlines with her latest act of generosity, announcing a remarkable donation of $640 million to non-profit organizations across the United States. This significant contribution far exceeds her initial plan for charitable giving this year, which had aimed to distribute 250 awards of $1 million each.

Scott’s philanthropic efforts have been ongoing since her high-profile divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in 2019. With a net worth of $37.5 billion, Scott has committed to donating the majority of her wealth, with this recent donation marking just one of many significant contributions. The bulk of her wealth stems from a 4% stake in Amazon acquired through her divorce settlement.

Out of over 6,000 organizations that applied for funding, Scott selected 361 small groups as recipients of her latest donation. Among the beneficiaries are prominent organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Alabama, Justice for Migrant Women, the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, and Mental Health Advocacy Services.

Scott’s approach to philanthropy has evolved over time. Unlike her previous practice of discreetly contacting organizations to offer substantial, unrestricted gifts, she adopted a more transparent approach this year. After a thorough review process, Scott’s team awarded $2 million to 279 non-profits and $1 million to 82 other groups.

Lever for Change, the organization overseeing the application process, commended the exceptional work of many applicants. This recognition led to an increase in both the number and amount of awards distributed, reflecting Scott’s commitment to supporting organizations dedicated to uplifting individuals and families facing financial hardship, discrimination, and systemic barriers.

Scott’s extraordinary generosity serves as a testament to her dedication to making a positive impact on society, with her donations empowering non-profits to continue their invaluable work in addressing pressing social challenges and promoting equality and opportunity for all.
