On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will visit Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda in Kyiv to discuss NATO membership.
Zelenskiy demanded a “political invitation” to join NATO at Tuesday’s July 11-12 summit in Lithuania.
NATO countries are close to taking modest steps to deepen ties with Ukraine by the Vilnius summit, but disagreements over how to approach Ukraine’s desire for membership remain.
Lithuania has long advocated for Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the EU. Norway sells Lithuania NASAMS air defense systems for Ukraine.
Nauseda’s office said the presidents would discuss “the NATO summit agenda,” Ukraine’s EU membership negotiations, and European support for Ukraine.
Nauseda will then attend a Thursday-Friday EU leaders’ summit in Brussels.
