On Friday, Kyodo reported that Japanese government sources were discussing a near-total ban on exports to Russia by the Group of Seven (G7).

Bloomberg reported Thursday that the US and Ukraine’s allies were mulling “an outright ban on most exports to Russia.” That article indicated G7 officials were contemplating the concept before a conference in Japan next month.

Hirokazu Matsuno, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, acknowledged the Bloomberg article but declined to comment on G7 and like-minded governments’ discussions regarding more penalties against Russia.

“What is important for ending Russian aggression as soon as possible is that G7 remains united for severe sanctions against Russia and strong support for Ukraine,” he told a press briefing.
