Forbes featured Kylie Jenner in America’s Women Billionaires in the August 31st, 2018 issue. Jenner, 20, is the youngest Kardashian-Jenner in the reality TV family and has created a cosmetic empire with her company Kylie Cosmetics. Forbes reported $630 million in lip kit sales and values Jenner’s company at $800 million. With Jenner’s TV appearances and endorsements with companies like Puma and Pac Sun, Forbes values her net worth at $900 million.
Forbes referred to Kylie Jenner as a “self-made billionaire” and this rubbed people the wrong way. Kris Kardashian is Jenner’s mother and PR/Financial advisor. Many people think that Kris is the true mastermind behind her daughter’s company. Kylie Cosmetics consists of 7 full-time employees and 5 part-time employees.
Some have criticized Jenner on Twitter following the Forbes article:
@lola_adewuya tweeted:
“Calling Kylie Jenner self-made without acknowledging anywhere the incredible headstart she had is what allows people to turn around and look at poor people and ask them why they haven’t become billionaires yet. Her story is not inspiring or motivating for anyone”
Others think that Jenner’s success should not be criticized but should be more understood.
Roxane Gay, an American writer, tweeted:
“It is not shade to point out that Kylie Jenner isn’t self-made. She grew up in a wealthy, famous family. Her success is commendable but it comes by virtue of her privilege. Words have meanings and it behooves a dictionary to remind us of that.”
Josh Ostrovsky, a comedian who refers himself as “The Fat Jew”, started a GoFundMe page to get Jenner to a billion. The page has a goal of $100 million and has only totaled $250.
Ostrovsky hit Instagram after the Forbes article debuted.
“Kylie Jenner was on the cover of Forbes Magazine today for having a net worth of 900 million dollars, which is heartbreaking. I don’t want to live in a world where Kylie Jenner doesn’t have a billion dollars. WE MUST RAISE 100 MILLION DOLLARS TO HELP HER GET TO A BILLION, PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD, THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.”
The Kardashian-Jenner clan has always received backlash but their business ventures prove a success.
