When questioned about allegations that Moscow leaked U.S. intelligence materials about several nations, including Ukraine, the Kremlin replied on Monday that people always blame Russia for everything.
Two U.S. officials said the leak of hundreds of secret papers had affected federal information-sharing and international relations.
Reuters has not independently confirmed the documents outlining the Ukrainian battle, including losses on both sides.
Given the scope of the materials, several national security specialists and U.S. officials assume the leaker is American, but they do not rule out pro-Russian forces.
A veteran CIA official believes Russia coordinated the leak to confuse and perhaps divide Washington and its allies.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said:
“I can’t say anything. You and I know that Russia is blamed for everything. Usually, it’s an illness.”
Peskov termed the disclosures “very fascinating” and claimed America might have spied on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
He continued, “But the fact that the United States has been eavesdropping on numerous heads of state, notably in European capitals, for a long time now has come out periodically, producing various embarrassing situations.”
