Kevin McCarthy was ousted as House Speaker in a historic vote. Even while neither Steve Scalise nor Tom Emmer has openly declared an interest in running, other Republican leaders like them could be. On an interim basis, Representative Patrick McHenry was appointed to the position. After conflicts with their right side, the past two Republican speakers of the House, Paul Ryan and John Boehner, left their positions.
Gaetz and a few friends blasted McCarthy for depending on Democratic votes to pass temporary financing that prevented a partial government shutdown during a discussion on the House floor. Republican Representative Bob Good remarked, “We need a speaker who will fight for anything – anything – other than going on as speaker.
Nancy Mace, a representative, told reporters that she voted to remove Speaker McCarthy from office because of his broken pledges to support a measure she sponsored on rape kits and improve access to birth control.
“I’ve made deals with Kevin McCarthy, with the speaker, that he has not kept to help women in this country,” Mace said. “We have not helped them in any way.”
McCarthy’s supporters, including some of the most outspoken conservatives in the chamber, said that despite Democrats controlling the White House and the Senate, McCarthy had effectively limited spending and advanced other conservative causes.
Republican Representative Tom Cole stated, “Think long and hard before you throw us into chaos, because that’s where we’re going.”
NOTHING DEMOCRATIC
Democrats said they no longer trusted him after McCarthy and Biden brokered a budget agreement in Mam.
Before the vote, Representative Pramila Jayapal told reporters, “Let them wallow in their pigsty of incompetence.”Over a dozen Republicans, including Gaetz, often voted against McCarthy’s speaker nomination in January. After 15 vote rounds spread over four days, McCarthy eventually won the gavel. McCarthy agreed to follow guidelines that made criticizing his leadership to get the position simpler.
Supporters of McCarthy have said that Gaetz was driven by a desire for attention, the possibility to advance in government, or animosity over an ongoing ethics investigation into potential sexual misbehavior and drug use.
Gaetz has stated that he is not driven by a hate of McCarthy and has denied any misconduct. This is not a criticism of the person; rather, it is a criticism of the job. The work hasn’t been finished, he declared.
