Across the border in Russia, the city of Orsk, situated approximately 1,800 kilometers southeast of Moscow, grapples with the repercussions of the deluge. An oil refinery in Orsk has been forced to halt operations in response to the flooding crisis.
The Kremlin issued a stark warning, highlighting that water levels in certain regions are escalating at an unprecedented rate, unmatched in the past century. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, disclosed that President Putin has directed the governors of Siberian regions, namely Tyumen and Kurgan, to brace for an imminent surge in water levels, anticipating inevitable flooding.
In Russia’s Orenburg region, nearly 4,500 individuals have been evacuated, following the breach of a dam on Friday, exacerbating an already critical situation. Alexander Kurenkov, Russia’s Minister of Emergency Situations, sounded the alarm during his visit to Orsk, emphasizing the gravity of the circumstances.
The Russian meteorological authority has issued warnings regarding the Ural River in Orenburg, projecting perilously high water levels over the ensuing three days. Regional authorities anticipate the flood’s apex on Tuesday, with a hopeful stabilization of the situation by April 20.
Meanwhile, in Kazakhstan, the emergency ministry reported on Sunday that approximately 12,000 people have sought refuge in temporary shelters. Furthermore, rescue efforts successfully relocated around 60,000 farm animals to safer locations.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed the nation, characterizing the calamity as the most severe natural disaster to afflict Kazakhstan in eight decades.
