Oscar-nominated actor Jeremy Renner apologized to his family for causing a New Year’s Day snowplow mishap that almost killed him.
On Thursday, Renner told Walt Disney Co.’s (DIS.N) ABC network that he drove the plow after pulling one of the family’s trucks out of the snow.
Renner was concerned for his nephew Alex, who had just unhooked the truck and plow chains as the plow skidded on ice. Renner glanced towards Alex without setting the parking brake.
The actor slipped and tumbled out of the plow’s cab.
“Is that what you mean? Like driving with one foot out “Renner informed Diane Sawyer from his wheelchair.
“But it was,” he said. “I paid for my error.”
Renner then tried to leap back into the snowplow to stop it from crushing his nephew. Instead, he walked across the plow’s driving tire tracks, which flung him forward. The truck plowed over him, fracturing over 30 bones, collapsing a lung, and piercing his liver.
The 52-year-old actor, best known for playing the Marvel character Hawkeye in “Avengers” flicks, was found by neighbors with blood all over him, faint breathing, and a skull fracture.
Renner said he woke up in the hospital and signed “I’m sorry” to his family.
Renner claimed responsibility. “I regret causing such suffering.”
Surgeons repaired damaged ribs with titanium rods and screws and rebuilt an eye socket with metal in his legs and face.
The actor walked with a walker. His injuries need hours of daily rehabilitation.
Renner was nominated for Best Actor for “The Hurt Locker” and Best Supporting Actor for “The Town.”
On Tuesday, he will return to Hollywood for a red-carpet gala for his TV series “Rennervations,” in which he refurbishes buses for underprivileged towns.
Family support helped Renner survive the snowplow accident.
“Love and titanium have refueled me,” he laughed.
