A source said Tuesday that Japanese and South Korean military authorities would link their radars via a U.S. system early next month to real-time exchange intelligence about North Korea’s ballistic missiles.
Defense ministers from Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. expect to strike an agreement during an Asian defense summit in Singapore early next month, according to the source, who declined to be identified.
North Korea’s ballistic missile tests accelerated information-sharing in November. In addition, South Korea and Japan share U.S. radar systems.
US-Asian ties improved with North Korea’s threat. Sunday’s “shuttle diplomacy” in Seoul reaffirmed defense cooperation between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
At the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on June 2-4, Japan and South Korea’s defense ministers will meet for the first time since November 2019.
