Italy’s antitrust regulator AGCM penalized Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram for what it described as unfair business conduct on Wednesday.
According to an AGCM statement, Instagram users were not properly notified about the use of their personal data for commercial purposes.
It also claimed that Facebook and Instagram users were not properly informed on how to dispute account bans.

Meta has already resolved the issues, according to the regulator.
“We disagree with the Italian Competition Authority’s decision and are considering our options,” a Meta representative said in a statement.
The representative also stated that Meta has implemented various improvements for Italian users since August 2023 to address the authority’s concerns, including improved openness on how the firm uses data to display advertising on Instagram.
