Two people with direct knowledge of the situation said Friday that Italian prosecutors requested a lawsuit against Eni (ENI.MI) and its president for suspected obstruction of justice in corruption cases in Nigeria and Algeria to be abandoned.
Sources indicated Eni Chief Executive Claudio Descalzi, another management, and the business would be cleared when prosecutors find proof.
Eni and CEO Descalzi’s counsel denied comment.
Milan prosecutors were supposed to seek Eni and its head’s removal in December 2021. Still, the probe was relocated to Brescia for jurisdictional grounds before being returned to Milan a few weeks ago.
Eni top administrators are accused of discrediting witnesses in Nigeria and Algeria corruption trials between 2014 and 2019.
Nigerian and Algerian corruption defendants were acquitted.
Milan prosecutors demanded a trial for five former Eni managers and a lawyer for suspected criminal conspiracy to impede justice and defame witnesses while dropping the case against the business and the two executives.
One judge will validate the dismissal, while another will arrange a preliminary hearing to decide whether to acquit or try the remaining accused.
