An Israeli bombing that took place on Monday outside of Damascus, the capital of Syria, resulted in the death of a top consultant operating within Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, according to three security sources and Iranian official media.

The adviser, Sayyed Razi Mousavi, was in charge of overseeing the military alliance between Syria and Iran, according to the information the sources gave Reuters.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces, responded to a question from a reporter during the evening news conference by saying, “I will not comment on foreign reports, whether they are about these or other events in the Middle East.” “The Israeli military obviously has a job to protect the security interests of Israel.”

The announcement that Mousavi had been murdered was displayed on Iran’s official television, which halted its usual news program to make the announcement. Mousavi was described as one of the Guards’ longest aides in Syria.

According to the report, he was “among those accompanying Qassem Soleimani,” the leader of the Guards’ special Quds Force, who was murdered in a drone operation carried out by the United States in Iraq in the year 2020.

As reported by Hossein Akbari, the Iranian ambassador in Damascus, Mousavi, was a diplomat stationed in the embassy. Iranian state television reported that after leaving his place of employment, Israeli missiles killed him.

In a statement, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi stated that the death of Mousavi demonstrated Israel’s lack of might. Raisi was quoted as stating, “This act is a sign of the Zionist regime’s frustration and weakness in the region, for which it will certainly pay the price,” according to Iranian media.

The Revolutionary Guards warned that Israel would face consequences as a result of the death of Mousavi, who held the rank of brigadier-general within the Guards.

“The usurper and savage Zionist regime will pay for this crime,” the Guards stated in a statement that was carried on state television.

“Iran reserves the right to take necessary measures to respond to this action at the appropriate time and place,” said Nasser Kanaani, a spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry, in a statement to state media.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization, for its part, referred to the execution of Mousavi as a “cowardly act” and stated that he had played a significant role in aiding the resistance in the region as well as the Palestinian people and their cause during his life.

The Israeli military did not immediately provide any remarks on the matter.

Iran’s influence in Syria has risen since it supported President Bashar al-Assad in the civil conflict that broke out in Syria in 2011. Israel has been carrying out operations against what it sees as Iran-linked targets in Syria for several years.

At the beginning of this month, Iran said that Israeli bombings had resulted in the deaths of two members of the Revolutionary Guards in Syria who had been serving as military advisors in that country.

Within the Syrian war, Iran has dispatched hundreds of Guards to act as “advisers” to assist in the training and organization of thousands of Shi’ite militia fighters from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. These militants are expected to support the regime. In addition, members of the Hezbollah terrorist group from Lebanon have collaborated closely with Iranian military leaders in Syria.
