Israel retaliates after Hamas attacks, deaths pass 1,100. In retribution for one of the worst attacks in modern history, in which the Islamist organization Hamas murdered 700 Israelis and kidnapped dozens more, Israel bombarded the Palestinian enclave of Gaza on Sunday, killing hundreds of civilians.

As the bloodiest such invasion since Egypt and Syria’s strikes during the Yom Kippur War 50 years ago, Hamas rebels’ rampage into Israeli villages on Saturday has threatened to start another inferno in the protracted conflict.

Following the threat of “mighty vengeance” made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli air raids on Gaza’s apartment complexes, tunnels, mosques, and houses of senior Hamas figures resulted in the deaths of more than 400 people, including 20 children.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated in the town of Ofakim, which saw deaths and hostages abducted, “The price the Gaza Strip will pay will be a very heavy one that will change reality for generations.”

Beyond the blockaded Gaza Strip border, Israeli soldiers and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, which Iran backs, traded artillery and rocket fire. In contrast, two Israeli tourists and a tour guide were shot and killed in Egypt.

Worldwide calls for moderation were made. However, most Western countries supported Israel, while Iran, Hezbollah, and demonstrators in several Middle Eastern countries praised Hamas.

On Sunday, more than 24 hours after their surprise, multi-pronged attack of missile barrages and gangs of gunmen who overran army facilities and raided border towns, Hamas gunmen were still battling Israeli security forces in southern Israel.

“My two little children are still infants. Yoni Asher recalled witnessing footage of Palestinian militants capturing his wife and two young girls after she took them to meet her mother. “They’re not even five and three years old,” he added.

At a press conference, Uri David stated that he spoke to his daughters, Tair and Odaya, over the phone for 30 minutes during an attack until they stopped responding and were unaware of their whereabouts.

He sobbed, “I heard shooting, shouting in Arabic, and I told them to lie on the ground and hold hands.”

CAPTIVES

Under scrutiny for failing to stop the onslaught, the Israeli military claimed to have retaken control of most ports of entry along security barriers, killed hundreds of terrorists, and captured dozens more.

The military claimed to have stationed tens of thousands of soldiers surrounding Gaza, a small area inhabited by 2.3 million Palestinians, and to be beginning the evacuation of Israelis along the border.

I’ve been in five wars. The conflict must end. Qassab al-Attar, a Palestinian in a wheelchair in Gaza whose brothers dragged him to safety, stated, “I don’t want to keep experiencing this.

Israel has not provided an official death toll, although Israeli media reported that at least 700 people, including children, died. Daniel Hagari, a military spokesman, referred to the incident as “the worst massacre of innocent civilians in Israel’s history.”

Hamas assailants slew several Americans, a White House National Security Council representative acknowledged, adding that the United States will keep a careful eye on the situation. The surprising flare-up would jeopardize U.S.-backed efforts to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. This security realignment might jeopardize Palestinian aspirations for independence and encircle Hamas’ primary supporter, Iran.

Hezbollah of Lebanon, Tehran’s other major regional ally, said that its “guns and rockets” support Hamas and engaged in hostilities with Israel in 2006. On Sunday, Israelis were shocked at the sight of bleeding victims in streets, cars, and even their houses, with assault debris still littering southern cities and border settlements.

According to Israeli media, over 30 Israelis who were missing after a shooting at a dance party have come forward. This brings the total number of fatalities at the outdoor event to 260. Numerous captives, including children and older people, soldiers, and civilians, were taken by Palestinian fighters and sent to Gaza. Islamic Jihad, a second Palestinian extremist organization, claimed to be holding more than 30 of the hostages.

After previous incidents where hostages were traded for many Palestinian captives, Netanyahu is left perplexed by the abduction of so many Israelis, some of whom were driven through security checkpoints or transported into Gaza while bleeding.

A Mexican man and lady were thought to be among the hostages.

Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said: “The cruel reality is that Hamas took hostages as an insurance policy against Israeli retaliation, particularly a massive ground attack, and to trade for Palestinian prisoners.”

ABUSE OF VIOLENCE

In a post on the social networking site X, Vice President Joe Biden stated that he had spoken to Netanyahu for the second day in a row and offered “my full support for the people of Israel in the face of an unprecedented and appalling assault by Hamas terrorists.”

As a sign of solidarity for Israel, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that he had sent the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group to the eastern Mediterranean and would soon start supplying new armaments to Washington’s closest Middle Eastern ally.

The U.S. declaration was denounced as “an actual participation in the aggression against our people” by the spokesman for Hamas in Gaza, Hazem Qassem, who also vowed that his organization would not be frightened.

To wait for the situation to improve, several major airlines, including United Airlines (UAL.O), Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), American Airlines (AAL.O), and Air France (AIRF.PA), stated they had halted flights to Tel Aviv.

On Sunday, Hamas launched further missile attacks on Israel.

In addition to homes and other structures, Hamas offices and training facilities were damaged in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza. Since Saturday, 413 Palestinians, including 78 children, have died, and 2,300 have been injured, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry blasted Israel as an “occupying power.” It was that it had no right or excuse to strike the defenseless civilian population in Gaza or anywhere in Palestine.

According to the U.N., at least 70,000 Palestinians in Gaza seek refuge at the schools it manages. It urged the establishment of humanitarian corridors so that food could be delivered to Gaza.

Early Sunday, individuals combed among the mosque’s ruins in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

“Just as we finished the night prayers, the mosque was attacked. Children, older people, and women were terrorized, according to local Ramez Hneideq. The bloodshed between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where a Palestinian authority exercises limited self-rule but is opposed by Hamas, which aims to destroy Israel, has increased, leading to the escalation.

Under Netanyahu’s hard-right administration, the West Bank situation has worsened, with increased Israeli incursions and attacks by Jewish settlers on Palestinian towns, and the Palestinian Authority has requested an urgent Arab League summit. Peace efforts have stagnated for years due to internal political squabbling in Israel over Prime Minister Netanyahu’s intentions to reform the court.

Ismail Haniyeh, the chairman of Hamas, said that Jerusalem and the West Bank will also come under attack. Since Hamas seized power in Gaza in 2007, residents have endured a 16-year Israeli-led siege. “How many times have we warned you that the Palestinian people have been living in refugee camps for 75 years, and you refuse to recognise the rights of our people?” Haniyeh stated.

With Biden warning Iran and others that “This is not the moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks,” the United States led Western denunciations of the Hamas attack. Ebrahim Raisi, the president of Iran, called the leader of Hamas to congratulate him on the “victory”. The bombings looked to be a catastrophic intelligence failure for Israel, a country with a renowned secret agency that boasts of infiltrating and tracking extremists.
