Donald Trump, a candidate for the presidency of the United States, has implied that Iran had hacked his campaign.
Late on Saturday night, the campaign team for the Republican nominee published a statement in which they claimed that the Iranian government had stolen and leaked crucial internal data they had obtained. Following the publication of a report by Microsoft that detailed foreign attempts to intervene in the election campaign in the United States this year, the claim was made.
Although they made reference to previous conflicts between Trump and Iran, the campaign team did not give any substantiating proof.
According to a statement made by a campaign official named Steven Cheung, “These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, with the intention of interfering with the election in 2024 and sowing chaos throughout our democratic process.”
On Saturday evening, President Trump sent a message on his Truth Social app stating that Microsoft had alerted the campaign that Iran had hacked one of its websites. However, Microsoft stated that they were only able to obtain information that was publicly available.
Just before to the claim, Politico published a report in which it stated that an unnamed source had promised to supply the United States media outlet with papers from within Trump’s operation. Among the materials that were presented was a report concerning the “potential vulnerabilities” of running mate Jeff Vance.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the National Security Council stated that the council takes any report of foreign meddling “extremely seriously” and condemns any group that attempts to undermine democratic institutions in the United States.
