Instagram Tests New Comment Downranking Feature to Improve Conversations
Instagram is testing a new feature aimed at enhancing discussions and minimizing toxic interactions in the comments section. Announced on February 14, 2025, by Instagram head Adam Mosseri and spokesperson Christine Pai, this feature could significantly influence how users engage with comments on posts and Reels.
Aimed at promoting a more positive environment, the feature introduces a way for users to privately indicate dissatisfaction with specific comments. Unlike the dislike buttons found on other platforms, this tool does not publicly display the number of downvotes it receives. Instead, Instagram may use these private signals to reorder comments, potentially lowering the visibility of unhelpful or contentious remarks.
The test aligns with Instagram’s continuous efforts to improve user experience, ensuring that harmful or divisive content does not dominate discussions. By allowing users more control over their interactions, the platform aims to create a space where healthier conversations can thrive.
During the test phase, a small group of users will see a downward-facing arrow next to the like button under comments. Clicking this button signals that the comment may not be helpful or appropriate. Importantly, this action remains private, ensuring that users can express dissatisfaction without encouraging public shaming or negativity.
Christine Pai, speaking about the initiative, explained, “We are exploring ways to give users more control over their Instagram experience by filtering out comments they find unhelpful or problematic.”
Social media platforms have long grappled with moderating discussions and reducing negative interactions. Instagram’s new approach is part of a broader push to prioritize user well-being by refining how comment visibility is managed. This tool could be particularly influential in high-engagement areas like Reels, where heated discussions frequently occur.
By potentially modifying comment rankings based on user feedback, Instagram hopes to promote more constructive and positive interactions while subtly reducing the prominence of negative remarks. Though still in its experimental phase, this feature represents a significant shift in how discussions may unfold on the platform.
For now, only a limited group of users will have access to the new option, but Instagram has indicated that the test may expand over time. Depending on user feedback, the platform could make further adjustments to improve moderation and control over comment sections.
This initiative is part of Meta’s broader strategy to enhance content moderation across its platforms. By continuously refining how interactions take place, Instagram is working toward fostering a digital space that prioritizes user preferences while maintaining open discussions.
Social media has always been a double-edged sword, offering opportunities for both connection and criticism. With this new feature, Instagram is taking a step toward cultivating a more thoughtful and respectful community. While the long-term success of this tool remains to be seen, it is a promising development in the ongoing effort to create healthier online conversations.
