On Friday, Reuter’s partner ANI reported that Indian police are investigating a protest outside its London High Commission this week, which has strained relations with Britain.

British and Indian media claimed that protesters with “Khalistan” banners removed an Indian flag from a first-floor balcony of the High Commission in London on Sunday to criticize recent police violence in Punjab.

Some Sikhs in India and abroad want an independent nation called Khalistan.

On Sunday, India called the senior British diplomat in New Delhi to express its “strong displeasure at the mission’s activities committed by separatist and extremist groups” and ask about “the utter lack” of protection.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly condemned violence on London High Commission workers and said police were investigating.

ANI claimed that Indian police were investigating.

“Case lodged after the Ministry of Home Affairs directed Delhi Police to take proper legal action,” ANI said.

Authorities and the British embassy in New Delhi didn’t reply to calls and texts.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Sikh militants slaughtered tens of thousands in an anti-government campaign.

Punjab police are searching for a Sikh preacher who has rekindled talk of an independent nation.
