Indian officials discussed Tesla’s automobile and battery incentives. A source familiar with this week’s conversations told Reuters that Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) had inquired how it might participate in local incentives in India relating to car and battery manufacture.

The electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer reportedly proposed establishing a factory in India to develop EVs and discussed plans to manufacture EV batteries locally.
After negotiations between Tesla and India stalled last year over Tesla’s request to reduce India’s extremely high import duty on automobiles (up to 100 percent), India has proposed a compromise. The Indian government wanted Tesla to set up shop in the country, but the company preferred to import automobiles first.

According to the source, who asked not to be identified since the conversations were confidential, Tesla and Indian officials discussed the country’s import levies on automobiles, among other topics.
