Israelis blocked roads nationwide on Thursday to protest the government’s judicial system change, extending a months-long campaign.
Hundreds of demonstrators with flags and placards blocked a Tel Aviv street throughout the workday. At a seaport, a small group burnt tires, temporarily impeding vehicles. Central Israel police removed protesters from the route.
As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hard-right administration announced new Supreme Court-limiting legislation at the start of the year, protests have increased.
The initiative has raised democratic concerns in Israel and abroad. Senior Finance Ministry officials warned this week of economic repercussions as military reservists joined the protests.
On Jerusalem’s Old City walls, people hung a large facsimile of the country’s proclamation of independence.
“We’re struggling to survive. In our 75-year-old state, we Jews are battling for our survival “said Jewish prayer shawl-wearing Avidan Friedman.
“We’re fighting because what’s happening is ripping us apart and we’re calling on the government to stop.”
Netanyahu continued with legislation to give the government the final say in judicial elections and limit the court’s capacity to strike down laws. In addition, a measure restricting prime minister removal was passed on Thursday.
Netanyahu, under trial for corruption allegations he denies, argues that judicial change is vital to balance government branches. Opponents claim it weakens Israel’s democracy and gives the government unchecked authority.
