Honduras’ senior diplomat announced that discussions for a trade pact with China would begin soon.
At a press briefing, Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina said the goal is to start discussions “soon” and sign a “free trade” agreement with Asia’s second-largest economy.
Reina thought it would be wonderful news and provide China access to our products.
After President Xiomara Castro sought investment and jobs from China, Honduras terminated its decades-long diplomatic recognition of Taiwan in late March.
Reina said Honduran coffee would be the first export to the enormous Chinese market, and both countries are also considering shrimp and melon shipments.
Honduras grows coffee.
Reina said China wants Honduran beef, bananas, and other things.
In April, the envoy said Honduras hopes to secure debt relief arrangements with China using financial institutions from its new partner.
