High-Rise Structure Devoured by Intense Flames

A high-rise residential building in the Campanar neighborhood of Valencia, Spain, is engulfed in a significant fire. The blaze, which has not been contained, affects a 14-storey block and has spread to an adjacent building. Firefighters are actively rescuing individuals from balconies, and there are concerns that people may still be trapped inside. At least 13 people, including six firefighters, have sustained injuries. More than 20 fire crews are working to control the fire, and authorities have advised the public to stay away from the affected area.

The building under fire consists of 138 flats housing approximately 450 residents. According to reports, firefighters have used cranes to rescue several individuals, including a couple on the seventh floor. Eyewitnesses have described the rapid growth of flames, particularly after the fire reportedly started on the fourth floor. Concerns have been raised about the building’s cladding, with experts suggesting that the material’s combustibility may have contributed to the swift spread of the fire.

One resident mentioned that the fire expanded within 10 minutes, emphasizing the potential role of the building’s facade material in the escalation. An engineer suggested that the outer layer, composed of aluminum plates with a foam insulator, is excellent for insulation but highly combustible.

Reports indicate ongoing efforts by firefighters to rescue individuals, including a teenager reportedly trapped on the first floor. The emergency response began at approximately 17:30 local time, and a field hospital has been established in the vicinity. Authorities have arranged for displaced individuals to be accommodated in hotels. Spain‘s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed dismay over the incident and extended solidarity to those affected, praising the efforts of emergency personnel on the scene.
