A representative for Maersk stated on Tuesday that the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd (HLAG.DE) would decide on Wednesday whether to resume trips via the Red Sea. This comes as Maersk is getting ready to return to the region after a U.S.-led operation began protecting against assaults.

After Yemen’s Houthi rebel group began targeting vessels earlier in December, leading to disruptions in global commerce through the Suez Canal, the leading shipping companies in the world, notably Maersk MAERSKb.CO and Hapag Lloyds, ceased their operations in the Red Sea.

Instead, they have diverted their voyage across southern Africa, a more time-consuming and costly journey. The canal is the shortest way if you want to travel between Asia and Europe by water.

Maersk disclosed on Sunday that it was preparing to restart shipping operations in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The company cited the deployment of a military operation under American command intended to ensure the security of regional commercial activity.

“We will decide tomorrow how we will proceed,” the spokeswoman for Hapag-Lloyd said on Tuesday, declining to speak further on the matter.

Last week, the corporation said that it would reroute 25 ships by the end of the year so that they would navigate away from the region.
