Haiti’s Capital: Residents Speak Out on Persisting Gang Violence

A friend from the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince sent me a text conveying a sense of panic gripping the city. The residents of Petionville, a relatively affluent area, were rattled by a surge in violence, marking one of the bloodiest days amid the country’s escalating security crisis. The streets were strewn with over a dozen bodies, casualties of the latest gang rampage, while even the home of a judge fell under attack, sending a chilling message to the ruling elite.

Unicef’s executive director, Catherine Russell, aptly described the situation in Haiti as “horrific,” drawing parallels to the lawlessness depicted in the post-apocalyptic film, Mad Max. This recent outburst of violence in Port-au-Prince serves as a stark reminder of Haiti’s precarious state, teetering on the brink of anarchy rather than stability.

Adding to the turmoil, the closure of numerous hospitals in the capital has left around 3,000 pregnant women at risk of giving birth without access to essential maternity care. At the maternity ward of Cap Haitien’s public hospital, the cries of newborns echo a universal plea for nourishment and comfort. However, these fundamental needs are far from assured in Haiti’s reality.

One new mother, Markinson Joseph, shared her desire to flee the country with her newborn son, citing the lack of resources and the pervasive violence. Dr. Mardoche Clervil, the hospital’s obstetrician, lamented the challenges posed by gang control over vital supply routes, hindering the delivery of essential medical supplies and equipment.

Tragically, inadequate access to healthcare has had dire consequences, exemplified by Louisemanie’s devastating experience. Her pregnancy complications went unaddressed due to logistical hurdles and violence, resulting in the loss of her baby.

Across Haiti, the humanitarian crisis has reached critical levels, with millions struggling to obtain basic necessities like food, water, and shelter. Farah Oxima, displaced by gang violence along with her nine children, voiced her despair over the country’s collapse and the inability of transitional measures to bring about meaningful change.

In the face of such overwhelming challenges, many Haitians, like Farah, feel helpless and see little hope for improvement, relying on faith rather than tangible solutions to transform their dire circumstances.
