On Wednesday, a barrage of gunfire broke out in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, near an outdoor party celebrating the NFL champion Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory. At least one person was killed, and 21 were hurt as fans rushed for safety.

According to Police Chief Stacey Graves, three people were arrested “and under investigation” in connection with the killings near the city’s famous Union Station following a parade that left a lot of confetti in the air.

Graves said that detectives didn’t know why there was a gun crime. Eleven of the people hurt by the gunfire or the chaos that followed were kids as young as 6.

Gunfire hit at least 22 people, killing one, according to the police. Lisa Lopez was one of the DJs at the local radio station KKFI and the host of the show “Taste of Tejano.”

At a news conference in the late afternoon, Fire Department Chief Ross Grundyson said that 15 of the dead had cuts that could have killed them.

Even though there were several hundred police officers on patrol for the Chiefs’ victory parade and gathering, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said it was hard to make sure that all public events were safe because of how standard guns and gun crime are in the U.S.

The Democrat Quinton told reporters, “It seems like almost nothing is safe. Parades, rallies, schools, movies—it seems like everything is under attack.” He said this after hearing gunshots and running for cover.

“We became part of a statistic of too many Americans—those who have experienced or been part of or connected to a mass shooting,” he stated.

Even hours after the violence, the precise circumstances were still unclear, and the authorities were still determining the number of fatalities and the ages of the victims.

During the event, Children’s Mercy Kansas City handled 12 people, 11 of whom were children between the ages of 6 and 15. According to a hospital spokesman, nine of the 12 patients were shooting victims.

Graves said that she knew of stories that some fans may have helped catch and chase at least one of the suspects and that detectives were looking at video of the event.

A lot of police are around.

Around 800 police officers, including agents from the FBI and the government Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), were at the gathering and parade that came before it.

The NFL team said all Chiefs players, coaches, and staff who attended the win party were safe and found.

The shooting happened outside, near a garage near the station. Police say it happened after a successful gathering after a parade.

A video on social media showed chaos outside the station, with dozens of armed police officers running into the building with their guns drawn while a large group of people ran the other way.

In a video that ABC News put online, you could hear gunshots going off quickly.

The Kansas City Star posted a video interview with Chiefs fan John O’Connor in which he said, “It sounded like fireworks at first.” He and other people in the crowd ran into a garage after hearing 15 to 20 shots fired quickly.

The 109-year-old Beaux Arts building that is Union Station was once a central U.S. train hub for both passenger and freight traffic. It is now home to a museum and other attractions, and it is also where Amtrak passengers get off and on.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was on stage with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and other players at the party after the game, but Kelce’s pop star lover, Taylor Swift, was back on tour in Australia then.

Mahomes said on X, “Praying for Kansas City,” and then he used a bunch of praying-hands emojis.

Chiefs LB Drue Tranquill, who was at the parade, asked for prayers on social media: “Pray that doctors and first responders will have steady hands and that everyone will fully heal.”

In a statement, the NFL expressed its “deep sadness” over the senseless shooting that took place in Kansas City today following the Chiefs’ celebration. Our hearts go out to the victims and everyone who was hurt.

While Missouri Governor Mike Parson and his wife were there when the shooting started, he told X that they were safe and sound afterward and thanked the police for their quick reaction.

The governor of Kansas, Laura Kelly, was also at the gathering when the blast happened.

As he has done after many other mass killings, U.S. President Joe Biden called for stricter gun laws to be put in place. Biden said he and his spouse “pray for those killed and injured today in Kansas City and for our country to find the resolve to end this senseless epidemic of gun violence.”

On Sunday, the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 25–22 in overtime to win the Super Bowl. It was their fourth National Football League title.

People were shooting at Union Station outside on June 17, 1933, killing four police officers and a criminal on the run. This event is famously known as the Kansas City Massacre.

It was six years ago today that one of the worst mass shootings in recent U.S. history happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 and hurting 17. The shooter, who was 19 years old and used to be a student, pleaded guilty and was given a life term.
