Goonies 2 Officially in Development with Steven Spielberg Producing

After nearly four decades of speculation, fans of The Goonies can finally celebrate—Warner Bros. has confirmed that Goonies 2 is officially in development. The announcement, made on February 14, 2025, has reignited excitement among moviegoers who grew up with the beloved 1985 classic. Even more thrilling is the return of Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg, who will serve as a producer through Amblin Entertainment.

Spielberg, who was instrumental in shaping the original, will be joined by longtime collaborators Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, and Chris Columbus, the original film’s screenwriter. Additionally, Lauren Shuler Donner will serve as an executive producer. However, Warner Bros. has yet to reveal the film’s director or plot details, keeping fans eagerly anticipating what’s to come.

A Nostalgic Return to a Classic

First released in 1985, The Goonies became a cultural phenomenon, blending adventure, humor, and heartfelt moments. Directed by Richard Donner, the film followed a group of kids from a small coastal town in Oregon who stumbled upon an ancient treasure map, leading them on an unforgettable journey. With a modest $19 million budget, it went on to gross $125 million worldwide and remains a beloved staple of 1980s cinema.

The film’s legacy was solidified in 2017 when the Library of Congress selected The Goonies for preservation in the National Film Registry. Its enduring popularity has fueled fan demand for a sequel, making this long-awaited announcement a major moment in movie history.

Will the Original Cast Return?

One of the biggest questions surrounding Goonies 2 is whether the original cast will reprise their roles. While Warner Bros. has not confirmed any casting details, some former stars have expressed interest.

Ke Huy Quan, who played the inventive genius Data, has recently found himself back in the Hollywood spotlight after winning an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once and starring in Disney+’s Loki. At a recent event, he acknowledged the constant fan curiosity about a possible sequel.

“It’s one of the most asked questions in my life,” Quan said. “I would love for it to happen.”

Corey Feldman, who played Mouth, also voiced his enthusiasm. “Get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die… There’s hope.”

What’s Next for Goonies 2?

Currently, the film’s plot remains tightly under wraps, leaving fans speculating whether the sequel will focus on a new generation or reunite the original gang for another thrilling adventure. Given Hollywood’s recent trend of reviving classic franchises with updated twists, either direction seems possible.

The nostalgia-driven wave of sequels and reboots has seen remarkable successes in recent years. With visionary filmmakers like Spielberg and Columbus involved, Goonies 2 has the potential to honor the magic of the original while crafting a fresh and exciting story for today’s audiences.

As development progresses, fans will eagerly await casting news and a potential release date. While many questions remain unanswered, one thing is certain—nearly 40 years later, The Goonies remains one of the most cherished films of the 1980s. With the right creative team at the helm, its sequel could once again capture the hearts of audiences both young and old.

Until more details emerge, fans can hold on to the timeless motto—Goonies never say die.
