Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google announced on Tuesday that Bard, its generative artificial intelligence, will be able to fact-check its responses and examine users’ personal Google data as the tech behemoth tries to overtake ChatGPT in popularity.

The debut of ChatGPT, a chatbot from Microsoft-backed (MSFT.O) OpenAI, last year spurred a scramble in the tech industry to provide customers with access to generative AI technologies. ChatGPT was the fastest-growing consumer application ever at the time, and it is currently one of the top 30 websites in the globe.

Bard has not taken off as quickly. According to online analytics firm Similarweb, it garnered 183 million visitors in August, 13% of what ChatGPT received.

Google is rolling out Bard Extensions, which allow users to input data from other Google products, as it looks to gain traction in the fast-moving AI area.

Users may, for example, ask Bard to search their Google Drive files or deliver a summary of their Gmail inbox. Bard users will be able to bring information in from Google apps for the time being, but Google is working with external companies to connect their applications to Bard in the future, according to Google senior product director Jack Krawczyk.

Another new feature in Bard aims to address a persistent issue for generative AI: erroneous replies known as “hallucinations.” Users of Bard will be able to observe which sections of Bard’s answers disagree with and agree with Google search results.

“We’re presenting (Bard) in a way that it admits when it’s not confident,” Krawczyk explained, adding that the goal is to increase user trust in generative AI by holding Bard accountable.

A third new feature lets users to ask others to join them in Bard discussions.
