GM Issues Recall for 820,000 Pickup Trucks Due to Tailgate
On March 1, General Motors (GM.N) announced a recall affecting 820,000 newer pickup trucks in North America due to potential issues with tailgate unlatching, posing a risk of unexpected openings. The recall spans model years 2020 through 2024, encompassing trucks equipped with power unlatching tailgates. The concern arises from the possibility of water leakage into the exterior tailgate switch, leading to a short circuit while the vehicle is parked.
GM indicated awareness of one reported incident resulting in minor injury and three complaints of minor property damage related to the recall issue. The recall impacts approximately 570,000 trucks in the United States and 250,000 in Canada, making it GM’s largest U.S. recall of the year and one of the more substantial recalls filed in 2024.
Both U.S. and Canadian regulators emphasized the potential danger of unsecured cargo falling from the truck bed onto the road if the tailgate were to open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion. To address the issue, GM dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies. Until replacement parts are available, vehicles in dealership inventory and owned by customers may have the part disabled. GM noted that the replacement parts will incorporate a new material to enhance resistance to water intrusion.
As a precaution, GM is advising owners to inspect the tailgate, ensuring it is closed and latched securely before driving. The affected vehicles include 2020-2023 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, as well as 2020-2024 heavy-duty versions of these pickup trucks with power unlatching tailgates.
The recall initiative stems from an investigation initiated by GM in November following complaints about unwanted tailgate openings. The company reported receiving 136 complaints related to unwanted tailgate opening incidents. GM is actively working to swiftly address and remedy the identified issue in collaboration with regulatory authorities.
