The German interior minister said Thursday that telecom carriers have agreed to restrict Huawei and ZTE from 5G network devices starting in 2029.
“We have now reached a clear and strict agreement with the telecoms companies,” minister Nancy Faeser told Berlin reporters, calling the accord essential for digital security in Europe’s largest economy.
The interior ministry, Deutsche Telekom,Vodafone and Telefonica Deutschland  reached an agreement to protect Germany’s critical infrastructure from China’s security threats.
Berlin informed Beijing of the arrangement, and Faeser did not expect reprisal over the proposed technological limits.
China’s embassy in Germany called Berlin’s move a “ruthless attempt” to crush competition and promote its own technology, warning that Huawei’s exclusion will have consequences.
“Network security concerns are a pretense. “No country has proven Huawei equipment poses a security risk,” the embassy said Thursday in reaction to Wednesday’s allegations about the intentions.
The minister did not elaborate on the deal.
In the second stage, Chinese antenna, transmission line, and tower manufacturers will disappear by 2029.
Germany is slow to implement EU 5G network security standards.

Telcos have resisted Berlin’s pricey phase-out of Huawei, while Huawei has opposed the “politicisation” of cybersecurity.
