DFB Vice President Hermann Winkler apologized Monday for a social media post criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s weekend visit to Berlin.
Zelenskiy visited German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in tightly guarded downtown Berlin on Sunday.
It was part of a frantic weekend visit by several major European allies to mobilize the military and financial support for an expected massive Ukrainian counter-offensive against Russian forces who invaded last year.
Winkler said, “At least the Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park is still standing for now” in response to road closures and other security measures.
The city closed for “a former Ukrainian actor.” Pre-election Zelenskiy acted.
Treptower Park memorializes German World War II, Soviet soldiers.
Winkler deleted his tweet and apologized, saying he spoke with DFB leadership.
“It (the post) was created in a very emotional situation for me at the memorial in the Treptower Park,” East German-born Winkler wrote on Facebook.
I’d change it. I apologize.” Winkler has been DFB deputy president since 2021.
He runs Saxony Football Association and DFB youth football. Germany hosts Euro 2024.
